How to Repair Receding Gums

If you have been diagnosed with or suspect you may be suffering from receding gums, chances are that you want to know nothing more than how to repair receding gums. The fact is that the answer is both simple and complex at the same time. The simple answer is that receding gums can often repair themselves over time. The more complex answer is that, in order to do so, the mouth must be as clean and sanitary as possible, and that diligent and concerted dental care is the only way that receding gums have even the slightest chance of regenerating non-surgically.

The only non-surgical way to repair receding gums, for those who are wondering how to repair receding gums, is to give them a perfectly clean slate to re-grow on. This means that your mouth and teeth need to be free of harmful bacteria, plaque and cavities. The only way that this can reasonably be accomplished is through an initial professional deep cleaning of the teeth, facilitated by at-home diligence. Meaning that teeth are brushed and flossed as directed by a dentist and antiseptic mouthwash is used diligently. In many cases, normal OTC products just don’t cut it, and the patient will be prescribed a stronger prescription only, oral hygiene product to help facilitate the re-growth of gum tissue.

Additionally, in order to repair receding gums, other habits may have to be adjusted as well. More specifically: smoking, drinking alcohol, eating and drinking excessive amounts of sugar, grinding the teeth and brushing the teeth too vigorously, have all been shown to contribute to the problem of receding gums. In order to truly repair receding gums efficiently (or even at all in some cases) most or all of these practices must be ceased or at least severely restricted. Depending on the circumstances, this can be a difficult process.

Finally, in some cases the gums simply will not re-grow themselves naturally. There are a variety of reasons why this may be the case, but the ultimate outcome tends to be gingival grafting surgery. This is a process by which small portions of gum tissue are surgically grafted onto areas that are experiencing receding. This tissue is generally taken from adjacent teeth or the roof of the mouth. The idea is that after the graft, the gums will begin to solidify, much like a skin graft on a burn victim. Even in these cases, the environment for re-growth must be clean and sanitary.
