Gums Have Receded

If you are struggling with oral health problems, one common symptom is receding gums. Receding gums are not just a standalone problem, but often actually a symptom of one or more larger and more serious problems. Some of the most common problems that contribute to the problem of receding gums are gingivitis and periodontal disease. Both of these fairly common oral health issues have similar symptoms, one of which being receding gums. While many people are unable to determine which (if either) of these conditions they may be suffering from, on many occasions, the first indication that something may be seriously wrong is that realization that your gums have receded.

So, what are the signs that your gums have receded? Among the most noticeable is the fact that teeth appear to get longer, due solely to the fact that more tooth is visible above the gum line, which actually gets lower. In addition to teeth appearing longer, they also often appear to get thinner as well. This, too, is because the gum tissue is shrinking. As it shrinks from between the teeth, they appear to develop gaps. Over time, as the gums recede further, the teeth also begin to both feel notched (when you run your tongue along them) near the gum line, as new tooth that was never before exposed is suddenly no longer protected by the gums.

If you are suffering from receding gums, you will probably also notice symptoms associated with gingivitis as well, as the two conditions are commonly associated with one another. If your gums receded as the result of gingivitis, it is very possible that you will not realize that they are receding until you begin to get the symptoms of your gingivitis under control. As gingivitis is an infection of the gums that often manifests by way of swollen and/or inflamed gums, this inflammation may disguise and/or camouflage the appearance of receding gums.

If your gums have already receded, you may think that there is no hope for your oral health. Fortunately, that is not true. It is possible to regain control of your teeth and gums; however, doing so will probably require the assistance of a dentist or other oral health professional. Depending on the severity of your receding gums and what other contributing underlying dental health conditions you may be suffering from, it may even be possible to re-grow gum tissue over time.
