Receding gums are a serious dental problem for many of people. While it has been demonstrated that many people in their 40’s and older suffer from receding gums, it has also been demonstrated that in many cases the problem begins in a person’s 20’s or even as early as in their teens. After decades of being allowed to develop and fester, it is no wonder that receding gums can often progress to the point that they cannot regenerate on their own, even with the most diligent of dental care. While disheartening, dental technology has evolved to the point that it is now possible to undergo gum surgery for receding gums.
While it is always advisable to attempt non-surgical methods of re-growing your gums when dealing with receding gums, the fact of the matter is that it is not always feasible or even possible to naturally re-grow gums in some instances, whatever the reason. This in one of the reasons that good and diligent dental care is so imperative when dealing with receding gums. A good dentist will be able to tell you when your efforts to treat, overcome and re-grow your receding gums are making progress and/or when it is time to throw in the towel and look into alternate means of re-growing your gums.
Of course, before gum surgery is ever considered, every effort to re-grow gums naturally must be attempted. In order for receding gums to grow back by themselves, all underlying dental conditions must be effectively and completely treated and overcome. This includes all traces of gingivitis and tartar, as well as any other issues that your dentist will have discussed with you. One of the most important things to remember when treating receding gums is that gums will not grow back on unclean, unsanitary, unhygienic teeth.
If you and your dentist (or other dental health professional) has determined that gum surgery for receding gums is the only way that you are going to get the gum re-growth and appearance that you desire, than you will probably end up undergoing the procedure. Gingival grafting works by grafting gum tissue from one area of the mouth to the area(s) of the mouth in which the receding of the gums has been determined to be problematic. Generally, this gum tissue is grafted from the area immediately adjacent to the area in which the re-growth is desired, or from the roof of the mouth. The specifics of each surgery depend on all of the individual factors of each case.
