Receding gums are a problem for a large percentage of the population age 40 and over; however it is believed that many of these cases begin in a person’s teens. That means that many cases of receding gums have been allowed to fester for decades, doing sometimes immeasurable damage, and in some cases irreparable damage as well. In fact, it is often a fear that their receding gums have progressed to an unfixable state that causes people to forgo dental care and try to hack it on their own. The sad fact of the matter is that in many cases, a dentist could fix receding gums if only the person suffering would take that first step and make an appointment.
If you have been considering doing something to fix your receding gums, a good first step is to make an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible. If you do not have a dentist, you really need to take a bit of time to find one who fits your needs. The best way to start your search for a new dentist (if that is what you need to do) is to simply see which dentists in your geographic area accept your dental insurance, and then narrow the list down to one or two possible candidates by reading patient reviews or seeking out word of mouth referrals. Schedule a consult with the dentist(s) you are most interested in, and then go from there.
Once you have found your appropriate dentist, the next step is to schedule an appointment for a routine cleaning/check-up/x-rays. Generally, it is only after a dentist has thoroughly inspected your overall dental condition that they can offer the kind of accurate advice that you need when trying to fix receding gums. If you are suffering from gingivitis or periodontal disease or some other underlying health condition, chances are you will have to address that issue first. In some cases, gingivitis may be treated simply through the use of antiseptic mouth rinse, while in others it may require a strong course of antibiotic. Periodontal disease generally requires a much more comprehensive treatment plan, facilitated by a periodontist.
If you are suffering from and truly want to fix your receding gums, it is imperative that you take the first step now. It is only with the concerted assistance of a trained dental professional that receding gums can be treated properly and, with time, potentially even fixed.
